Nutritional Therapy and Functional Diagnostic Medicine

Nutritional Therapy aims to bring relief to current symptoms of ill health and to restore feelings of vitality and wellbeing.  A Nutritionist will combine knowledge of human physiology, biochemistry and nutrient metabolism to build, repair and maintain body function.  Both food and nutritional supplements are used to provide the body will specific nutrients at therapeutic levels.

Questioning and examination of symptoms goes someway to uncovering the fundamental causes of ill health. However due to our biochemical individuality, which is dictated in part by genetics and part by our environment, a Functional Diagnostic Medicine approach can help to identify your unique nutritional needs.

Functional Diagnostic Medicine

This is a science based healthcare which focuses on the patient and not the ‘one size fits all’ management of health. Functional medicine looks at the complex balance of internal and external factors which have an influence on our physiology. It incorporates functional diagnostic testing which allows me to assess, amongst other things

  • nutritional status
  • digestive function
  • intestinal microbiological environment
  • detoxification potential
  • endocrine and neurocrine function

I recognised the potential of Nutritional Therapy during my search to find a natural approach to cope with endometriosis.  Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine have taken away the painful symptoms of endometriosis whilst also giving me a "positive vitality" - increased energy, clarity, productivity and happiness.

Health is neither fixed or constant due to changes in our physical, emotional, spiritual and social environments.  I have found that during challenging life experiences enjoying and eating good food supports me physically and mentally.

I decided to retrain as a Nutritional Therapist after working in retail management and completed a degree in Nutritional Medicine at Thames Valley University (now West London).  On finishing this course I wanted to learn more about Functional Medicine and so a large part of my Continued Proffessional Development includes training in Functional Diagnostic Medicine with Dr. D. Weatherby, a leading educator in this field.

I am a memeber fo BANT (British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy).
